Ovi Publisher guide updated, some surprises!

Via Bill, the Ovi Publisher guide was updated. A note that the OMA DRM Forward Lock that was supported before, now it’s not:

“WRT, Widgets are not supported. Java applications and *.NFL files for S40 devices are not supported.”

Here is a discussion on the OVI Publisher forum, which seems to explain that at least one device has a bug which prevent to install .NFL files. Not sure regarding DRM Forward Lock, but the Nokia S40 devices that I tested works fine.

It would be great to know why OMA DRM Forward Lock cannot be applied to content on the OVI Store. Anyone?

    Hi Alessandro,
I’m writing here because from your article suggests that you know about the things I want to ask (I couldn’t find the answers on Nokia forum).

I’m about to release my first flash application on OVI, and I’m still confused with some options.
    - The OMA DRM option can be selected now from the OVI publishing content pannel, but would that work on all S60 devices? Would I be better off not selecting the option? Also me not knowing anything about DRM, I have not implemented any DRM solution either with the .swf or .sis file, but I guess the option offered by OVI is just for that purpose, no need to add any code for DRM to work, it’s all done by OVI, is that right?
    - When publishing Flash Lite content (as SISX), would you create your .swf file with the “protect from export” option , and with the “compress movie” option? I wouldn’t like that to interfere with QA from OVI, especially if you answer NO to the question “does your file contains encryption?”

Your answer would be greatly valuable and appreciated, thank you in advance.

    Ciao,

selecting the option will apply OMA DRM to the sis not to the swf. In any case just select it, it’s not a bad idea.

the “protect from export” it’s just a simple protection, I would set it.
the “compress movie” depends how big and how much memory your app use. Since selecting compress movie increases the memory consumption since the FL player will make a copy in memory of the swf before playback. So if your app does use a lot of memory do not set the “compress movie” option otherwise it’s ok.
OVI QA does not look at this options.

“does your file contains encryption?” Always NO for Flash Lite content.

by the way, what’s your name? :)

Thank you so much Alessandro, my name is Romain (French, living in the UK), sometimes refered as “Roman Age” on the web.

Thanks to your answers I’m ready to submit for QA.
The road has been long, for a first project, but whatever the outcome it’s been a great journey.

I’d read some posts from you on the Nokia forum, but never visited your blog. It’s great, keep it up, and thank you again. I’ll let you know when it’s on the OVI store, and provide the link to my website, so far there’s no much on it.
