SEE 2010 in Amsterdam

Via Symbian Blog, the SEE 2010 in Amsterdam is happening between November 9th and 10th. Free to attend.

“We’ve moved SEE 2010 to Amsterdam—a city that, much like the Symbian ecosystem, is comprised of a unique cultural fabric and deep creative roots. The SEE 2010 venue, Beurs van Berlage, was originally designed as a commodities exchange—a place custom built to facilitate the sharing of information and ideas. Influenced by modernist architects to reject the styles of the past, the venue for SEE 2010 will be an open arena for creators and innovators to engage, exchange, and explore the opportunities that will drive the industry forward.”

OVI Browser on the way?

Via unwiredview.com, looks like Nokia is working on a desktop browser called OVI Browser which integrates the OVI Services including the OVI Store.

My guess, it’s the equivalent of the iTunes, and it does make total sense!! Finally !

“The confirmation comes from none other, then the biggest Nokia security service bogeyman – Eldar Murtazin, who says that he now got some playtime with the beta version of OVI browser.”

They have a twitter account too: OviBrowser

Couple of days ago I spotted a new device, Nokia 5250, listed on the OVI Store, and now others are mentioned too. Most likely it’s a Flash Lite 3.1 device.

Samsung bada and Flash Lite integration

I have been digging in Samsung bada and Flash Lite 3.1 which is supported by the Samsung Wave. I downloaded the Samsung bada SDK and played with the demos. The Flash Lite implementation is close to the MMI enviroment where Flash Lite can be used as UI element but at the same time be standalone content.

From my initial investigation Flash Lite content needs to be integrated with the bada C++ APIs to be able to work. I have made some progress and I got working Flash Lite content in fullscreen mode, input text and loading data from an external source (both data and graphics).

Testing on the Samsung bada SDK using Samsung bada IDE is ok but for Flash Lite development is necessary to have a real device especially to see how text, animation and graphics look like.

Nokia financial results out, numbers looking good!

Nokia financial results are out and seems it’s looking good !

Read a good analysis from Tomi with some great numbers for handsets and OVI Store.

“Nokia continued to grow and enhance the usability of Ovi Store for consumers and publishers. The release of Ovi Store 1.7 during the second quarter delivers improvements to browsing and search consumer experience. Nokia’s most popular devices each have access to more than 13 000 content items (including apps) in the store. Ovi App Wizard achieved 1 million downloads in just 10 weeks since launch with thousands of partners publishing thousands of apps. The store has been attracting on average more than 1.7 million downloads a day. Additionally, 90% of Nokia consumers who can access Ovi Store can now do so in their local language (where Ovi Store supports at least one of the country’s primary languages), while more than 80% of those with local language availability can also purchase from Ovi Store in their local currency.”

  • OVI Store 13,000 content items
  • OVI Store 1.7 millions download per day
  • OVI App Wizard achieved 1 million downloads

Nokia donates Java runtime to Symbian

Via gcn.com, Nokia announced that they will donate their Java runtime engine to the Symbian Foundation.

“The JRT is available in the latest Symbian Product Development Kit (PDK), which is the first PDK based on the Symbian^3 operating system”

“This means that developers can write Java applications for Symbian^3 devices, like the recently announced Nokia N8,” wrote Nokia’s JRT product manager, Aleksi Uotila, and senior software specialist Jyrki Aarnos, in a blog post. “More importantly, the JRT is now open source so the community can modify and add to the JRT implementation under the terms of the [Eclipse Public License].”

Here are more details.
