Air mobile and Flex mobile, where Flash Lite fits?

At Adobe MAX 2009 there will be couple of sessions on Air mobile and Flex mobile.

  • Now where Flash Lite fits into this ?
  • What is the road map for Flash Lite ?
  • Will Flash Lite content be compatible with Air Mobile and Flex Mobile?

These are important questions to be answered for anyone that is currently investing money and time and it would be great to have a clear answer.

  1. Hi Alessandro,

I think Flash Lite will die on 3.x. It’s known that future mobile devices will have full Flash player and AIR runtimes, so it will be full AS3 runtimes. By the way, in the open source Flex project, there is a subproject to create some kind of Flex light, to have light components for mobile devices.

So, in my opinion Flash Lite will disappear, but not Flash in the mobile, only the AS2 “lite” framework.

    Regards!

  2. Flash Lite’s long-term survival is up to OEM’s now. Also, there’s going to be heavy fragmentation. Already we are seeing evidence of this (but what else is new).

  3. Philippe Chassany says:

As Alessandro said, so much time/money already spent.
Moreover, a new fragmentation will be induced. AIR player will be only available for very high-end phones.
Even if the device turnover is quick (a little bit less than before with the worldwide crisis), it will take years to get a unique AIR player running on mass market phones.

  4. Phillippe, but wouldn’t you have to agree that most people are consuming a lot more content on those “very high-end phones”, though?

  5. Here you have an interview with Adobe people talking about Flash and AIR mobile and a probably Flash Lite for lower devices http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Te8QbL_Vsxg
