An interesting article on Adobe blogs about AIR3 secure data persistance.

“A second feature in AIR 3 which can make data persistence more secure is the introduction of the mobile EncryptedLocalStore (ELS) API. ELS has been available for the desktop profile since 1.0, but AIR 3 is the first version which makes it available on mobile.”

Note that there is a difference between iOS and Android implementation. It would be great to know the behavious on other platforms such QNX.

Native extention for AIR Mobile, good or bad?

Got a tip from Stuart about a new site extensionsforair.com focusing on native extention for AIR 3.0 for mobile devices. While I think native extention are a great solution I personally think it’s not the best.

As usual the developer community covers technology deficiency by extending functionalities. But this is a short cut by technology provider not to implement these functionalities. It’s a risky business since compatability issues are just around the corner.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that some of those extention created for iOS and Android were available in Flash Lite since the beginning. Of course this solution will extend functionalies behond what was supported by Flash Lite but it’s clear to me that AIR Mobile should support these extentions by default for consistency.

Anyway, good to see once again the developer community step up and lead the way! Maybe these extentions need to be incorporated in the next releases of AIR!

Adobe AIR for Digital Home on LG, TiVo and others

Another announcment today from Adobe MAX 2011 is about Adobe AIR expanding its reach to LG tvs and TiVo. Read press release.

“Adobe Systems Incorporated today announced that LG and TiVo have become the latest partners to bring Adobe(R) Flash(R)-based applications via Adobe AIR(R) to connected TVs and digital home devices. Content partners can now take advantage of AIR to deliver Flash(R)-based console-quality gaming and premium video across TVs, Blu-Ray players and set-top boxes.”

Adobe Tooling goes mobile with Adobe Touch Apps

Today at the Adobe MAX 2011 keynote, Kevin Lynch announced the Adobe Touch Apps which are a set of apps running on Tablets making their tools mobile. Look at the videos to look how Adobe tools become mobile!

Check out Photoshop touch and Proto, pretty impressive.

While the press always point to Flash on the web or mobile web, the power of Adobe AIR to develop for multiple devices is a very good proposition which does get much attention.

Flash 11 and AIR 3 announced

Adobe announced Flash 11 and AIR 3. There are a lot of new features and better performance.

Accelerated 2D/3D Graphics: Full hardware-accelerated rendering for 2D and 3D graphics enable 1,000 times faster rendering performance over Flash Player 10 and AIR 2. Developers are able to animate millions of objects with smooth 60 frames per second rendering and deliver console-quality games on Mac OS, Windows and connected televisions. A pre-release brings these same accelerated 2D and 3D capabilities to mobile platforms including Android, Apple iOS and BlackBerry Tablet OS. A production release for mobile platforms is expected in the near future. For examples of 3D games for Flash Player, visit www.adobe.com/go/gaming.
AIR Native Extensions: With support for thousands of highly-optimized, open-source libraries, developers are able to tap into unique software and hardware capabilities including access to device data, vibration control, magnetometers, light sensors, dual screens, near field communications (NFC) and more. Native extensions also allow developers to more deeply integrate AIR applications with other business software.
Captive Runtime: Developers can automatically package AIR 3 with their applications to simplify the installation process on Android, Windows and Mac OS in addition to Apple iOS. Users no longer have to download and update AIR separately on any of these platforms, or BlackBerry Tablet OS, which includes AIR built in. In addition, with the captive runtime option developers can manage version updates to their application independent of general AIR updates by Adobe.

Adobe AIR 2.5 is now available!

Via Adobe AIR Team Blog, the Adobe AIR 2.5 is now available! Here is what’s new on AIR 2.5.

“Adobe is pleased to announce at the Adobe MAX 2010 conference the availability of Adobe AIR 2.5 for televisions, tablets, smartphones and desktop operating systems. Adobe AIR 2.5 now supports:

Smartphones and tablets based on BlackBerry® Tablet OS, Android™ and iOS
Desktops running on Windows®, Macintosh and Linux® operating systems
Televisions with Samsung as the first television manufacturer to ship Adobe AIR in its line of Samsung SmartTV devices”

“…Acer, HTC, Motorola, RIM, Samsung and others are expected to ship the AIR runtime pre-installed on a variety of devices including tablets and smartphones later this year and early 2011.” No Nokia?

“Flash Player 10.1 is available on Android and Google TV today, with BlackBerry platform, HP webOS 2.0, future versions of Windows® Phone, LiMo, MeeGo, and Symbian OS also expected to support Flash Player 10.1″

Flash 10.1 supported phones.

“Adobe InMarket™, a new service that allows developers to easily distribute and sell their applications on app stores across different device types on app stores from Acer, Intel, and others is now available.”

Apple lifts ban on 3rd party tools, Flash back in?

Looks like Apple reversed ban on content created with 3rd party tools which includes Flash.

“We are continually trying to make the App Store even better. We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our iOS Developer Program license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to relax some restrictions we put in place earlier this year.

In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.”

The “…as long as the resulting apps do not download any code.” is a bit troubling !

But more then Apple been nice, I think the following regulatory investigation had something to do with it in addition to market share loss and increase competition from Android and giant Nokia kicking off Symbian^3 !!!

Let’s see what Adobe has to say about this !

Speaking at WHYMCA Mobile Developer Conference

Adobe stops iPhone packager solution

Via Mike Chambers, looks like that Adobe iPhone packager/development solution is been canceled.

First let me say this. Apple business is no different from a Carrier/Operator. You have to deal with them, no matter what, they decide everything, even your future as a developer/business.

Now, I feel sorry for all those developers/business who bet all their recent efforts on this solution, they are many! The only great thing is that since it’s Flash development, they can shift their target mobile platform with very little effort.

What surprise me is the total absence of Nokia and Samsung from all this Flash 10.1/Air Mobile saga. The first and second largest mobile OEM in the world. Nokia, actually Symbian, already mentioned that they will integrate Flash Lite 4 and then Flash 10.1 in their platform. I know Samsung has implemented Flash Lite 3.1 in Bada and have other few handsets (Symbian based) with Flash 2.x/3.x. But wouldn’t you image that the 2 largest OEM in the world, be the primary partners for Adobe mobile strategy?

Why Adobe is not showing Flash 10.1/Air Mobile running on the Nokia and Samsung devices? Saying to developers: here the millions and millions of consumer you can reach with your content! Both these companies have direct to consumers App Stores, so it’s a clear business case.

Adobe CS5 launched, Device Central gets serious!

Today Adobe CS5 was launched and it will be available on April 30th. For mobile the most interesting thing is the update to Device Central which now includes HTML rendering (it includes webkit) and geolocation, accelerometer, and multitouch. In addition to other features.

“Test embedded SWF or FLV and HTML-based content with built-in WebKit support and integration with Dreamweaver. Emulate server requests and inspect Flash Player memory consumption to adapt network performance to the mobile context.”

“Simulate inputs like location and movement to test response on supported devices. Take advantage of the physical features of mobile devices with a new set of Adobe device APIs such as geolocation, accelerometer, and multitouch”

Flash content on the iPhone browser possible?!

Today several twitts and facebook messages pointed to an Open Source Flash™ runtime written in pure JavaScript called: Gordon.

Here is a page with the demos. But the interesting one is the screenshot of the iPhone browser running one of the demos.

Anyone can confirm that everything runs ok? I tried to run the demos in my Nokia N95 8GB with Flash Lite 3.0 and they did not work (correction!!).

Flash Lite 4 not in standalone? Air Mobile the only option?

I was reading this article on PC pro (I think they did not understand what is Device Central!) about Flash 10.1 on mobile devices and noticed a link to this post from Mark on the Adobe forums which mention that Flash Lite 4 and Flash 10.1 are only browser plugins. This is a different information from the one I gather from an interview with Adrian Ludwig from Adobe.

So for the future the only standalone option would be Air Mobile (beside Flash on iPhone)?

I think is important to clarify these information.

Flash Lite Distributable Player is dropped by Adobe!!!

During yesterday eSeminar with Mark, came the news that the Adobe dropped the Flash Lite Distributable Player.

Looks like Adobe is concentrating on Flash 10.1 for the mobile browser, Air Mobile for standalone and Flash Lite 4 for the embedded low end devices, plus the iPhone.

I would be curious to know how many developers did have a strategy around the Flash Lite Distributable Player, any comments?
