In the mobile world, fragmentation is mobile! You must enbrace it not fight it ! You won’t find anyone on the planet, about 4 billions mobile phones, who have 2 equal phones with the same apps, wallpapers, ringtones or settings. That’s mobile. People change their phone every 12/18 months. Your mobile content life span is very short in general. Keeping up with this kind of pace is not only difficult but complex and complicated!

Reading the comments from the Flash developer community is clear that the Adobe/Macromedia were not able to convert a good ammount of Flash developers to be mobile developers or attract mobile developers to use Flash for mobile. This justify the drop of Flash Player plugin for mobile browsers and the changes that are happening. There are also technical reasons but the main reason is that Flash developers are not mobile developers!

I have always mentioned this to developers, how do you make money from Flash withing a mobile browser? You cannot beside doing it with ads! And also, who are the developers who understand how to create mobile content within the mobile browser in Flash? Not many!

My comments were always to focus development on Flash as mobile applications, like Flash Lite, now AIR Mobile, but Flash developers are not mobile developers (ofcourse there are some of them who really understand mobile, and most come from Flash Lite background!) and this is has been always an issue. I have mention this to Adobe execs many times and I am not the only one.

Here is a article to support what I am saying! “A lot of the early mobile Flash developers wanted to create standalone apps, but Adobe wanted to build a mobile platform, so they focused on trying to get distribution of their web plug-in on mobile phones. There was an impedance mismatch and Adobe just took too long to come to the right conclusions.”

So to me is not a surprise that Flash within a mobile browser will be killed, but Adobe message has been misleading about this effort which is not cool !

Hopefully this will allow Adobe to focus their effor on AIR Mobile to be a more complete mobile technology!

As usual the developer community covers technology deficiency by extending functionalities. But this is a short cut by technology provider not to implement these functionalities. It’s a risky business since compatability issues are just around the corner.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that some of those extention created for iOS and Android were available in Flash Lite since the beginning. Of course this solution will extend functionalies behond what was supported by Flash Lite but it’s clear to me that AIR Mobile should support these extentions by default for consistency.

Anyway, good to see once again the developer community step up and lead the way!  Maybe these extentions need to be incorporated in the next releases of AIR!

I just installed Symbian Anna on my Nokia E7 and Nokia N8 and it looks like a great update especially the browser, faster and more stable.

Here is the map of your GPS location on a mobile web page received by your friend via SMS/Email. The map is created using the OVI Maps Rendering API.

For Nokia touch devices there will the option to open OVI Maps client application. If your friend has an Android phone or an iPhone, they will be able to open the Google Maps client application.

If your friend is at home or has a tablet, than can open the link in the full browser using the OVI Maps and the OVI Maps API.

While doing  an application porting from Flash Lite to AIR Mobile (Android at the moment) I encounter an issue with SMS support. Not sure why I did not encounter this before, maybe because I was thinkging it should not be an issue.

Basically I need to send a SMS with some predefined text, the SMS body, but this is not possible. So the following code is not possible:

• navigateToURL(new URLRequest(”sms:1234567890?body=Ciao!”));

only the following:

• navigateToURL(new URLRequest(”sms:1234567890″));

Other developers encounter this issue and the solution isn’t really there.

Now in Flash Lite your just use the following code within a button:

• getURL(”sms:1234567890?body=Ciao!”);

This is available since Flash Lite 1.1 from 2004, 7 years ago!!! Yes, that’s right, 7 years!

I am reading that this issue is due to the Android API for SMS communication with other apps (could not find the right source), but it’s a major issue. SMS is basic in mobile communitcation and it should be supported in all its aspect no matter what. Every application should have a Share via SMS feature!

Not sure if there is a workaround (anyone?), will do some digging, but at the moment I need to put on hold the application!!

More about Nokia X7. “Flash Lite 4 will support a majority of Flash Player 10.1 content”.

Looks like many blogs are saying that the Nokia X7 has Flash 10 but from the specs it has Flash Lite 4.0.
