Nokia donates Java runtime to Symbian

Via gcn.com, Nokia announced that they will donate their Java runtime engine to the Symbian Foundation.

“The JRT is available in the latest Symbian Product Development Kit (PDK), which is the first PDK based on the Symbian^3 operating system”

“This means that developers can write Java applications for Symbian^3 devices, like the recently announced Nokia N8,” wrote Nokia’s JRT product manager, Aleksi Uotila, and senior software specialist Jyrki Aarnos, in a blog post. “More importantly, the JRT is now open source so the community can modify and add to the JRT implementation under the terms of the [Eclipse Public License].”

OVI distribution: packaging and signing

Here is a great resource for packaging and signing for distributing content on the OVI Store.

“The packaging format for Flash Lite content distribution depends on the target environment. For Symbian devices, the content must be packaged into a SIS file, and for Series 40 devices, an NFL file.

SIS files must be signed to install. Signing options for Flash Lite content are the same as for Symbian C++ applications.

Starting on June 23 with the public beta of Nokia signing Symbian apps for free, we are exploring a developer workflow to reduce the time for Ovi Publishers to two weeks and bring the cost involved to $0 (USD). At this time apps written with Flash Lite are supported. If you’re interested in participating in this public beta, please send an email to publishtoovi.support@nokia.com with your Ovi Publish username and you’ll receive more details.”

Mobile App Stores are wallet garder silos?!

After my previous post, Mobile App Stores 70/30 revenue split too little, is it a cartel?, Andrea posted a message on twitter which is a very well known issue for long time for anyone in the mobile space. Before there were carriers/operators that were the gate to get mobile content now OEM have been added to the mobile content market.

In fact is becoming even worst since many of these mobile application stores force developers to use very different mobile technologies.

Nokia OVI Store: Symbian C++, Qt, J2ME, WRT, Flash Lite
Samusng Market: Symbian, Java, Bada, Java (Android), Flash Lite, web apps
RIM: Java, web apps
Sony Ericsson PlayNow: J2ME, Symbian C++, Java (Android), Flash Lite, web apps
Google Android Market place: Java, web apps
Apple AppStore: Objective C, web apps
Microsoft: ….

(I am sure I am missing some technologies and of course more OEMs)

These are just some examples of OEM, now add Operators/Carriers around the world who mix and match their own technologies on top of devices. It’s becoming a real mess!!!

OVI AppWizard rocks !!!

Yesterday Dale posted an interesting news about OVI AppWizard, a new service from Nokia OVI Publisher to create apps for the OVI Store. The idea is pretty simple. If you have a blog or site with an rss feed, the OVI AppWizard, takes your feed and creates a customized mobile application.

I asked yestarday to get access to it, this morning got an invitation and published my first 2 mobile applications!

Basically, OVI AppWizard is a step by step web application, gets your site feed, upload couple of banner/icons, customize colors, add mobile ads to monetize from AdMob and DONE! At the end of this process you get a zip file containing, all the necessary files to enter your content in the OVI Publisher, including the WRT and Java application, icons, screenshots and a pdf with all the necessary information.

With these 2 applications, you can address all the devices listed on the OVI Publisher!! It took me 10 minutes to create and publish 2 applications ( 2 wgz and 2 jar).

I am really impressed by how easy and fast was the process but also the potential to have your favorite mobilized web site directly on your phone!!!

UPDATE: it would be cool to add a link to the OVI Store company page so that you can drive traffic to your other apps on the OVI Store!

SWFxME project released

Here is a great J2ME/Flash Lite project to extend capabilities of Flash Lite: SWFxME

This is a similar project to Jarpa but it can be used with Flash Lite 1.1 and so with higher number of mobile phones. It would be great to create a list of phones that can support this new tool.

Enhancing the security prompting for Java apps, and Flash Lite ?

Via Developing for S60 some infos about enhancing the security prompting messages for Java, this should implemented for Flash Lite content too. If your application connects to the network, the Flash Lite player will prompt a similar message and that’s it! No more prompts if the user “Allow Always”.

Sony Ericsson Project Capuchin: Swf2Jar packaging for Flash Lite released !!

Via Mark, Sony Ericsson released the Flash Lite packaging tool swf2jar. Here is the download page.

“Swf2Jar 1.0 is an application for packaging a FlashÃ¢â€žÂ¢ file (.swf) into a MIDlet jar. The application supports setting Jad properties for the MIDlet, as well as signing the MIDlet. After packaging, the MIDlet can be transferred to a phone. When running the MIDlet on the phone, the packaged Flash content is automatically played.
Note: The Flash file (.swf) will be visible on the phone screen while the MIDlet is running only if the phone
supports Project Capuchin.”

I tried to creaete a jar for a Nokia, did not work!

PS. just checked the jar file created, it’s Sony Ericsson specific!! I wish it could work for other OEM!!

Flash Lite/Java ME applications: MTV On Demand and Mobile Mtv Blog Uploader

Here some interesting information:”Since there were specific requests, there was the need to build both a FlashLite and a Java ME version of this app: the first one was released for Nokia 5320, while the other one was preloaded in SE W760″

Ok, so there was a specific request for a Flash Lite application, this is great. But the most interesting thing is that the MVNO, MTV Mobile powered by TIM requested this and they advertise Flash Lite capabilities on the phones page.

Congrats to Alessandro, looks like a great project!! Would love to try the application!

Via Hayden, the Sony Ericsson has announced a new phone, Sony Ericsson C905, which is the first phone supporting Project Capuchin J2ME+Flash Lite

Here more information on the specification of this phone with a mention of “Sony Ericsson Project Capuchin API” in the Java section.

Update: here is a white paper with some information on Flash Lite support for “animated wallpapers, menus and other graphics elements”.

What’s the best Flash Lite business model ?

David has another interesting post regarding the different business models for Flash Lite content. He listed several which pretty much sums up the options available to developers to make money out of Flash Lite content. This is not an easy topic since there are many factors that outside developer’s control.
One thing that always surprise me is that all the people that I talk to are not aware that Flash Lite technology is second to J2ME as install base and hopefully by this time of next year will be number one. Seems that not many people in the mobile industry are aware of this !!
So what’s the best business model for Flash Lite content? As David point’s out the majority of Flash Lite companies are pretty small in size and very passionate about their work. I think that building a portfolio of Flash Lite content is key to get business going.

Sony Ericsson Capuchin project, short white paper

In addition to the Flash Lite/J2ME API there will a packing tool SWF2JAR and seems that Sony Ericsson phones with these capabilities should be in the market in the second half of 2008.
